The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is evaluating the future status of the State Route 208 Suspension Bridge in Dresden, Ohio. The bridge was constructed in 1914, however, it was bypassed in 1989 with realignment of SR 208. The bridge has not been functionable for quite some time and the last maintenance completed on the bridge was in 1997.

The existing structure is in poor condition with deteriorating concrete, holes in the bridge deck, and steel corrosion. The bridge remains closed to pedestrian due to the severely deteriorated substructure and superstructure members that have rusted through.

ODOT determined that upgrading the structure to allow for operation as a pedestrian facility would cost approximately $6 million. Costs to allow the structure to remain in place with no live loads is estimated to be $3.6 million. Demolition of the bridge would cost the department between $1.0 to $2.0 million. Based on the cost estimates and long-term maintenance requirements, it was determined that the most prudent use of state highway expenditures is removal of the bridge. We feel that ODOT fulfilled the commitment made thirty-four years ago to bypass and maintain the historic bridge.
