Interstate 77 and U.S. 30 Resurfacing & Bridge Improvements

Project Description

Resurfacing of Interstate 77 between State Route 800 and U.S. 30, pavement replacement on I-77 at the U.S. 30 interchange, and the rehabilitation of the I-77 bridge over Market St., 15th St., and Cleveland Ave., the replacement of the I-77 bridge over the west branch of Nimishillen Creek and the replacement of the U.S. 30 bridge over the Nimishillen Creek. Work completed in 2022 included bridge reconstruction and replacements on I-77 southbound as well as pavement replacement on I-77 southbound. Work to be completed in 2023 includes bridge demolition, bridge painting and resurfacing.

Maintenance of Traffic

Minimum of one lane of traffic maintained on I-77. Current ramp closures at the U.S. 30 and I-77 interchange to remain closed until early summer. Nightly ramp closures through the summer and fall. All detours will be posted.

Timeline

Phase 3 (Fall 2020 – Fall 2021)

Beginning on Tuesday evening, December 8, the ramp from I-77 northbound to U.S. 30 westbound will be closed.

• Traffic will be detoured onto I-77 northbound through the Cherry Avenue loop ramps back to U.S. 30 westbound.

• December 8, the I-77 northbound median travel lane will be shifted to the southbound side of the median (contraflow lane) and the outside northbound lane will be diverted to the Cherry Avenue detour route.

The ramp from Cherry Avenue to U.S. 30 westbound will be closed.

• Traffic will be detoured onto 11th Street back to U.S. 30 westbound.

Phase 4 (Fall 2021 – Fall 2022)

I-77 southbound traffic will maintain two lanes by being shifted over a crossover to I-77 northbound. I-77 northbound travel lane will be shifted to the outside shoulder to maintain one lane. The outside northbound lane will continue to be diverted to the Cherry Avenue loop ramps.

US 30 westbound to I-77 northbound will be open to traffic.

The ramp from U.S. 30 eastbound to I-77 northbound will be closed. 

• Traffic will be detoured onto U.S. 30 eastbound through the Cherry Avenue loop ramps to US 30 westbound back to I-77 northbound.

The ramp from I-77 northbound to U.S. 30 westbound will be closed.

• Traffic will be detoured onto I-77 northbound through the Cherry Avenue loop ramps back to U.S. 30 westbound.

The ramp from Cherry Avenue to U.S. 30 westbound will be closed.

• Traffic will be detoured onto 11th Street back to U.S. 30 westbound.

Phase 5 (Fall 2022 – Summer 2023)

I-77 northbound and southbound traffic will be shifted onto the outside shoulders to maintain two lanes in each direction.  

The ramp from U.S. 30 eastbound to I-77 northbound will be closed. 

• Traffic will be detoured onto U.S. 30 eastbound through the Cherry Avenue loop ramps to US 30 westbound back to I-77 northbound.
