Real Estate Academy

Each Real Estate Academy training program is prepared and offered with the intention of achieving the following objectives:

  1. provide cross-training opportunities for all current staff
  2. provide a well-rounded program for new employees
  3. provide courses in each right of way discipline to enhance performance of current duties.
  4. provide right of way consultants with specific Ohio and ODOT rules for the right of way acquisitions process.

Online Courses

Value Analysis (VA) Prequalification (March 2023)

The purpose of this course is to provide a basic understanding of the valuation formats used for simplistic acquisitions as well as the laws and policies empowering these valuation formats. Emphasis will be placed upon basic appraisal principals, problem solving, proper completion of the valuation formats and understanding policies and procedures.

In-Person Courses

Acquisition 104 (Part B) (3/2/2023)

A one-day course to provide the understanding of ODOT's Instruments, property rights, and legal aspects of deed preparation.

Registration

Relocation 201 (3/7/2023-3/9/2023)

An advanced three-day course that focuses on the policy and procedures governing residential relocations.  Students will learn advanced theories, such as increased interest payments; incidental expenses; and fractional owners.

This course has been approved by the Ohio Department of Commerce, Division of Real Estate & Professional Licensing for 11.5 hours of CEUs in Appraisal and 9.5 hours of CEUs in Real Estate.

Prerequisites: Relocation 101

Acquisition 103 (Part A) (3/21/2023)

A one-day course to provide an understanding of ODOT's Special Acquisition Procedures and related forms. This course covers Early Acquisition, Acquisition of Tenant-Owned Improvements, Acquisition of Publicly Owned Property, The Uneconomic Remnant, Acquisition Procedures for Excess Land Parcels, Procedure to Obtain a Right of Entry and Procedure for Damage Claims.

This course has been approved by the Ohio Department of Commerce, Division of Real Estate & Professional Licensing for five (5) of continuing education credit in Real Estate.

Prerequisites: Acquisition 102 A&B

Acquisition 103 (Part B) (3/28/2023)

A one-day course to provide an understanding of ODOT's Special Acquisition Procedures and related forms. This course covers Donation of Real Estate, Owner Retention of Improvements, Encroachments, Boundary Surveys, Outdoor Advertising Devices, Leasing Vacant Buildings During the Acquisition Phase of a Project, Acquisition of Cemeteries, Offsetting the Price Paid for an Acquisition Parcel by the Value of Excess Land, Acquisition of Contaminated Property, Acquiring Property Subject to the Garage Law.

This course has been approved by the Ohio Department of Commerce, Division of Real Estate & Professional Licensing for five (5) of continuing education credit in Real Estate.

Relocation 202 (4/4/2023-4/6/2023)

A three-day course which focuses on the policy and procedures that govern non-residential relocation.  Students will learn how to assist a business or nonprofit organization to successfully relocate to a new location.  Case studies will focus on reimbursement for move and reestablishment expenses.  Students will learn about Ohio's Economic Loss and Loss of Goodwill payment provisions and about the fixed payment option to businesses.

This course has been approved by the Ohio Department of Commerce, Division of Real Estate & Professional Licensing for 2.5 hours of continuing education credit in Appraisal and 7.5 hours of continuing education credit in Real Estate.

Acquisition 104 (Part A) (4/11/2023)

A one-day course to provide the understanding of ODOT's Instruments, property rights, and legal aspects of deed preparation.

Acquisition 105 (5/23/2023)

A day course to provide the ability to prepare and process simplistic real estate closings, tax remittance and recordings.

Prerequisites: Acquisition 101, Acquisition 102, Acquisition 103, and Acquisition 104

Relocation 204 (6/7/2023 - 6/8/2023)

This course will become part of the requirements for approval as an ODOT Relocation Reviewer; will serve as a refresher and required continuing education every two years for all ODOT approved Relocation Reviewers; will clarify the scope and the responsibilities of the Relocation Reviewer; will review the Relocation Assistance Program Rules and Regulations on both a Federal and State level; will provide updates and changes to Policy

Prerequisites: Relocation 101, 201 and 202.

7 Hour USPAP Update (8/1/2023)

A one-day course that focuses on recent changes to USPAP requirements for ethical behavior and competent performance by appraisers.  ODOT will award an attendance certificate to those needing continuing education that attend the entire session.

This course has been approved by the Ohio Department of Commerce, Division of Real Estate & Professional Licensing for 7 hours of continuing education in Appraisal and Real Estate. 

Prerequisites: 15 Hour USPAP Course

Acquisition Plan Reading (9/13/2023 - 9/14/2023)

A two-day course providing an in-depth study of the interrelationship of the construction plans, right of way plans, legal descriptions and appraisal report, so the negotiator can explain the impact of the project to the residue, both verbally and in writing through the preparation of the Plan Letter to the owner(s).

Prequalification Requirements 

All consultants selected to work on ODOT transportation projects need to be prequalified.
