Dedication, then opening of Clinton Street bridge to happen Monday

The following is an update regarding the progress of the Clinton Street bridge project, downtown Defiance. The $8.3 million project will completely replace the bridge which carries state Routes 15, 18 and 66 over the Maumee River. The bridge closed Feb. 25, 2019 for approximately nine months. The project is scheduled for completion July 2020.

  • The bridge? It's opening.
  • Let's say that again: The. Bridge. Is. Opening!
  • On Monday, Dec. 2 at 3 p.m., the city of Defiance is planning a ceremony at the south side of the bridge to dedicate the Clinton Street bridge officially as the Purple Heart Bridge. At some point after the ceremony, the bridge will open fully to traffic, which means all four lanes will be in operation.
  • The first person to officially cross the bridge -- which is definitely not the truck driver from Florida -- will be Santa Claus, who will arrive in Defiance on Saturday, about 1:30 p.m., to kick off Small Business Saturday and the Christmas shopping season.
  • While you're downtown Saturday, you should take a look from a safe distance at the bridge, which happens to be opening Monday.
  • In addition to traffic signal work and pavement striping this week, crews have also been pouring sidewalks on both the north and south ends of the bridge.
  • Crews have also been working on finishing the parapet railing and cleaning it up, as pictured here.
  • As a side note, the bridge is opening.
  • The decorative lighting, being installed in this photo, is mostly in place now, but will not be functioning when the bridge opens. That work will continue under traffic.
  • The lights were salvaged from the former Clinton Street bridge and were able to be saved.
  • By the way, the bridge is opening.
  • Decorative plaques are in place on all four corners of the bridge. They are pictured in these photos of the bridge which, by the way, is opening Monday.
