The Far East Freeway is a series of projects to address to growing regional travel demand between downtown Columbus and its eastern suburbs by improving the Interstate 70 corridor from Livingston Avenue in Franklin County to the Fairfield/Licking County line. An investment of more than $430 million is planned to widen I-70 and reconfigure the interchanges at I-270/Brice Road, U.S. Route 33/Petzinger Road, Hamilton Road, and State Route 256/Taylor Road.

Project 1 – I-70/I-270/Brice Road Interchanges

Phase 1 – I-70/I-270/Brice Road Interchanges Eastbound (PID 95639)

CONSTRUCTION DATE: 2022

COST: $80 million

  • New directional ramp from I-270 southbound to I-70 eastbound (to replace exiting loop ramp)
  • Reconfigure ramps from I-270 north to I-70 east to Brice Rd. to reduce weaving and merging
  • Add eastbound ramp lane on I-70 between I-270 and Brice Rd.

ESTIMATED CONSTRUCTION DATE: 2035-2037

ESTIMATED COST: $78 million 

  • Reconfigure ramps from Brice Rd. to I-70 westbound 
  • Reconstruct I-70 westbound ramp to I-270 northbound 
  • Add westbound ramp lanes on I-70 from Brice Rd. to I-270
  • Widen Brice Rd. bridge over I-70 and south of I-70 to Tussing Rd.

Phase 4 – I-270/I-70 Interchange (PID 99959)

ESTIMATED CONSTRUCTION DATE: 2035-2037

ESTIMATED COST: $140 MILLION

  • New directional ramp from I-70 westbound to I-270 southbound (to replace existing loop ramp)
  • Reconfigure I-270 northbound loop ramp to I-70 westbound to converge with the I-270 southbound to I-70 westbound ramp
  • Add new I-270 bridges over reconfigured I-270 northbound ramp 

Project 2 – U.S. 33 and Petzinger Road

Phase 1, Safety Upgrades – Petzinger Road Safety Improvements (PID 113744)

CONSTRUCTION DATE: 2023

ESTIMATED COST: $5.5 MILLION

  • Petzinger Road intersection will be converted to a signalized RCUT with U-turns at I-70 and Winchester Pike in Columbus
  • Realign U.S. 33 southbound south of Petzinger Road to eliminate James Road left entrance and weave to SR 104 exit

  • Construct U.S. 33 overpass at Petzinger Road to allow free flow access to I-70

Project 3 – I-70 at Hamilton Road

Phase 1 – Safety Upgrades - Hamilton Rd. Safety Improvements (PID 109014)

CONSTRUCTION DATE: 2022-2023

ESTIMATED COST: $3.2 MILLION

  • Widen Hamilton Road ramp to I-70 eastbound to two lanes
  • Realign I-70 east entrance and exit ramps at SR 317/Hamilton Road intersection
  • Remove I-70 east to SR 317 NB connector
  • Remove connector to Hilton Corporate Drive 
  • Upgrade traffic signal

ESTIMATED CONSTRUCTION DATE: 2035-2037

ESTIMATED COST: $29.5 MILLION

  • Widen Hamilton Road bridge over I-70 to allow dual left turn lanes in each direction 
  • Reconfigure and widen the ramp from Hamilton Road to I-70 west (remove the southbound right slip lane)
  • Add a second northbound right turn lane at the entrance ramp to I-70 east
  • Build ramp lanes on I-70 between Hamilton Road and I-270 

Project 4 - I-70 at SR 256 and Taylor Road

ESTIMATED CONSTRUCTION DATE: 2035-2037

ESTIMATED COST: $72 MILLION

  • Realign ramps at SR 256
  • Extend ramp lane between SR 256 and Brice Road
  • Build Taylor Road bridge over I-70 and ramps to I-70
  • New ramp lane between SR 256 and Taylor Rd.
  • Widen Taylor Road and add turn lanes at SR 204
