I-71/U.S. 36/SR 37 interchange expansion
About the project
The project will construct a new interchange along I-71 between Cheshire Road and U.S. 36/state Route 37 (Delaware Sunbury Road) in Sunbury. The interchange will connect I-71 to Sunbury Parkway, a proposed roadway that is to be built by developers and connect to U.S. 36/state Route 37.
Future local projects will widen Sunbury Parkway and extend the connection from I-71 to the west.
Work on the interchange could begin as early as 2022 pending available funding.
ODOT began evaluating and developing alternatives to provide a long-term solution to fix the current interchange. The study determined that fixing the existing interchange wasn't the solution. ODOT then evaluated whether a second interchange should be located north or south of the existing interchange. Based on existing and future traffic demands, a second interchange to the south was determined to be the best course of action.
ODOT made safety improvements to the existing interchange, including the addition of turn lanes, wider ramps, upgraded striping, and removable curb and median to prevent T-bone crashes.
ODOT further developed the 2012 study to assess whether the new interchange should be a stand-alone improvement or work in concert with the existing interchange. ODOT determined that an improvement which combined the existing interchange with additional ramps to the south would be the best option for a regional solution.
Planning and design of three alternatives, dozens of meetings with property owners and stakeholders, an April 2016 public meeting to solicit feedback on the three alternatives, and another public meeting in October 2016 to share the preferred alternative and project details.
Construction ready to begin, based on available funding.
