I-480 Valley View Bridge deck replacements
About the project
The I-480 Valley View Bridge structures sit high above the Cuyahoga River Valley, spanning 4,155 feet and carrying 180,000 vehicles a day during peak travel times. This project will replace the bridge decks of the structures, which are now over 40 years old and have reached the end of their lifespan.
Additionally, a new bridge will be constructed between the two existing structures to ensure that four lanes of traffic will be maintained in both directions during bridge deck replacements. When the project is complete, the new bridge structure will remain in operation to carry two additional lanes of traffic in each direction.
Traffic shift (effective September 13, 2020)
- All I-480 eastbound traffic will officially be traveling on the new I-480 Valley View Bridge beginning Sunday, September 13, through Fall 2021 as crews work on the existing I-480 eastbound bridge. Eastbound traffic will still have access to the I-77 interchange and exit to Transportation Blvd.
Steel erection for the new bridge will begin and all four lanes on both the east and westbound bridges will be shifted to the right to accommodate construction equipment. Traffic will remain in this configuration through fall 2020.
On September 13, traffic on the eastbound Valley View bridge was shifted onto the new bridge as crews work to replace that bridge deck. Eastbound motorists will still have access I-77 north and southbound and be able to exit at Transportation Boulevard in this configuration. You can check out a video commemorating this project milestone here.
The eastbound bridge deck work is set to be complete and traffic will be shifted back onto the eastbound bridge. All traffic on the westbound Valley View bridge will be shifted onto the new bridge as crews work to replace that bridge deck. Westbound motorists will be able to access I-77 north or southbound in this configuration.
The westbound bridge deck is set to be complete and traffic will be shifted back onto the westbound bridge. Operations will begin to prepare the new bridge to carry two-way traffic including construction of a median barrier wall, striping, and signage.
The new bridge will open and begin carrying two lanes in each direction. The two westbound lanes on the new bridge will bypass the I-77 interchange for those motorists wanting to continue on I-480. In the eastbound direction, the two lanes on the new bridge will bypass the Transportation Boulevard exit.
