The Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) is a comprehensive statewide plan that addresses the most prevalent causes of roadway deaths and serious injuries in Ohio. This data-driven plan establishes common goals, priorities and strategies; provides a framework to track implementation of activities and safety investments across organizations; and helps maximize Ohio’s resources as various agencies and organizations work together to prevent injuries and save lives on all public roads.
The plan was developed in collaboration and coordination with local, state, federal and private sector organizations from a variety of traffic safety disciplines, including engineering, education, enforcement and emergency response. Coordination also occurred with the state’s other transportation plans including: Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), Highway Safety Plan (HSP), Commercial Vehicle Safety Plan (CVSP) and State of Ohio Rail Plan. Collectively, these stakeholders developed an SHSP that is comprehensive and actionable with emphasis areas focused on safety for all road users, including cars, trucks, trains, motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians.
